Head Start is a comprehensive child development preschool program, serving children between the ages of three and five with classrooms in various areas of the county. Center sessions operate Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The children are introduced to readiness skills, such as: colors, numbers, letters, and shapes. Children are given the opportunity to develop self-help skills, work and play in small and large groups, learn socialization skills, problem solving and enhancement of their language skills.
Parents are welcome and encouraged to be involved in all aspects of the program's operation.
Head Start provides workshops, training, and information of interest to families, such as: parenting skills, child development, discipline problems and solutions, nutrition, single parenting, CPR, literacy, job training, employment, and affordable housing.
Up to 10% of the total number of children enrolled in Head Start can be over the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The Head start Program enrolls children with disabilities. Centers are located in Barnesville, Flushing, St. Clairsville, Martins Ferry, Bellaire and Powhatan Point.
