RSVP is an outgrowth of the efforts by private groups, gerontologists, and government agencies to address the needs of retired persons in America.
The program was launched in 1971 through an amendment of the Older American Act with eleven programs administered under the Administration on Aging. In 1993 the Older Americans Volunteer Programs were reauthorized as the National Senior Volunteer Corps and today, ½ million volunteers serve through 757 programs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
RSVP began in Belmont County in 1973 to provide a variety of opportunities for persons who are retired or 55 years of age to participate more fully in the life of their community through volunteer service. The CAC of Belmont County sponsors a program locally.
There are 130 volunteers providing services and sixteen stations: hospitals, schools, soup kitchens, the Health Department ,museums, garden centers, nursing homes, various civic organizations, and as literary tutors.
Volunteers are covered by supplemental accident insurance to and from their volunteer station and while they’re performing their volunteer duties.
Each volunteer receives an orientation, a handbook to explain the program, a name badge, and any training required by the volunteer station. Once a year a recognition is held to honor volunteers and the hours of service and dedication they give so willingly to the community. New stations and volunteers are encouraged to become part of this team.
